Sometimes you happen upon a place with the intention to pass through only to find yourself enjoying it so much you stay for a while. That's exactly what happened to us when we landed in Danang. Initially our plan was to fly in on a late flight, stay the night, and then head on up to Hue. After checking into our hostel, which was the best hostel of our trip, we ended up staying for a couple of days. Danang is the entry point for Central Vietnam, it's airport services the massive attractions of Hue and Hoi An. But many people overlook what Danang has to offer. Our first night we spent in the Funtastic Danang Hostel, centrally located and excellent value for their spacious and clean dorm rooms.
Hoi An has been an important fixture in the tapestry that is Vietnam for a long time. It was one of the main trading ports in the 16th and 17th centuries, an integral part of the spice trade during the 7th - 10th centuries when it was controlled by the Champa people, and later a town with a strong merchant community. The marks of these influences are still heavily etched into the streets of Hoi An's old quarter. If you want to know all about the food of Hoi An, and how the different cultures have influences the food of the region, check out our video below. The Old Quarter is a massive draw for domestic and international tourists alike. For VND120,000 (around $US6) you get entry into the are
As the world increases the frequency with which it travels it also spends more money. Much of this money goes to tour companies who use the services of people who live in developing countries. We all want a good deal and often see paying a little extra as a 'rip off' where everything else is dirt cheap. But in trying to find a good price, unfortunately, many do not consider the welfare of the employees or environment in their decisions. Our hope for this article is that it will raise awareness of these practices and hopefully influence a change for the better. Below I discuss ways you can engage in responsible tourism, learn more, and help to make this change possible. This article came abou
As Australians we are used to hiking in warmer weather. As expats living in a country with wildly differing temperatures we have learned to adapt. Normally we would not have considered a hike if it was under 10°C (50°F) but after being presented with a 4 day weekend and return flights for less than $50 USD per person, we jumped on the opportunity - and rugged up for a 4°C (39°F) hike. Hallasan, or Halla Mountain in English, is located on Jeju Island, south-west of the South Korean mainland. It is a lazy hour flight from Gimpo Airport and when you land in Jeju-si the city centre is only 5 minutes from the airport. the island while quaint in appearance compared to the larger cities of South K
We decided to go to Sri Lanka on a whim. We wanted to go somewhere where the sun would be shining and we could just book a flight in and out and make no other travel arrangements. To be honest I knew very little about Sri Lanka, other than the stories I had heard from my sister who had traveled there a few months before. Her report summarized the experience to good food, friendly people and a worth while destination. So, armed with a little information, we booked a flight to Colombo, the nations capital. We were on a tight time frame. Dean had just started a new job and they were hesitant to let him go anywhere for more than a week, and I had finished up one job and was just about to start a
While routinely forgotten off many an itinerary of Vietnam, Huế previously held a very important role in the nation's identity, until quite recently. In fact, Huế served as the nations capital until 1945, when the capital was established in Hanoi. As a lover of history, particularly royal history, Huế was one of the very first cities I was adamant about visiting as we traveled around Vietnam. Much of the grandeur of the one time capital was destroyed around 1968 with a dozen of the once ornate buildings surviving out of the 160 original. Although the effects of the American-Vietnamese war left deep scars not only on the country's people but on their culture as well, Huế stands as a shining r
